Much of the ITS infrastructure currently being planned and built in the MAG region, largely depends on the underlying communications infrastructure for its operation. The amount of data and information that are being exchanged among regional agencies for managing the transportation system keeps increasing at a rapid pace. The MAG ITS Committee recognized the urgent need to look ahead at future communication requirements to support the various systems that are being deployed across the region. This study will examine current state of regional ITS infrastructure and operations, and also project ahead based on current population growth trends to generate recommendations on a path for the region to consider in developing a sound communications platform for building future transportation management systems. The following tasks will be carried out in this study. Task 1: Review Projected Multimedia Communications Loading and Project Information Exchange RequirementsExisting planning information will be gathered and reviewed. This information will be utilized to determine communications loading on the regional ITS communications network. Task 2: Review and Tradeoff of Communications Technology and StandardsCommunications loading requirements and associated locations of cities relative to the topology of the regional communications network will be examined to define minimum communications bandwidths required over the next 10 years. This will define the class of communications network technology required. A trade-off analysis will be conducted related to communications technology candidates. Task 3: Analysis of Best Choice Approach to Meeting MAG Regional Communications Requirements for ITSBased on the communications requirements analysis of Task #1 (including current, 5 year and 10 year communications requirements projection) and Technology and Communications Standards Tradeoff Analysis of Task #2, a recommended approach to meeting regional ITS Communications Network requirements will be developed. Task 4: Develop an Updated Regional ITS Communications PlanBased on findings and recommendations of Tasks #1 through #3 and based on recommendations resulting from MAG review, a Regional Communications Plan will be developed.
