GoalThe goal of human services internships at the Maricopa Association of Governments is to provide a macro-level perspective with hands-on, meaningful experiences working with elected officials, government agencies, policy makers, nonprofit providers and the public. Fall SemesterHomeless Policy: assist with the following projectsProvider Trainings Facilitate training every other month with an emphasis on cross-training between homeless and domestic violence shelter and service providers. An average of 25 people will attend each training and at least 75 percent will indicate information received at the training will result in improved service delivery as measured in an evaluation administered at each session. Homeless Assistance Application Increase the HUD award to the region by $1 million by strengthening the consolidated application for McKinney-Vento funds through improved training and technical assistance for applicants in the third quarter. At least 85 percent of MAG Continuum of Care Regional Committee on Homelessness members and Planning Subcommittee members will indicate that the application was effective and improved from the previous year. Street Count Preparation Prepare for a county-wide homeless street count to take place in the third quarter of FY 2010. Contact and confirm coordinators in each municipality and provide technical assistance as needed. Facilitate trainings throughout the region. Periodic Gaps Analysis for Unmet Shelter Need Determine the unmet shelter need by conducting a periodic gaps analysis. The results from the periodic gaps analyses will be used to develop the annual gaps analysis submitted as part of the consolidated application to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for homeless assistance funding. The impact will be a more statistically sound measure of how many more shelter beds are needed and a better understanding of the demographics and needs of the people using the beds. The MAG Continuum of Care Regional Committee on Homelessness will approve the periodic and annual gaps analyses in FY 2010. Domestic Violence Policy: assist with the following projectsService Delivery Priorities Develop priorities in collaboration with domestic violence and homeless shelter and service providers about client principles. The principles will include standards of treatment and expected outcomes for all people served in the MAG region. The impact will be clarification of and commitment to high quality services for people experiencing domestic violence and homelessness. The MAG Regional Domestic Violence Council and the MAG Continuum of Care Regional Committee on Homelessness will approve the Memorandum of Understanding in the first quarter. New Regional Plan to End Domestic Violence Develop a new Regional Plan to End Domestic Violence through research, community input and committee expertise. The plan will identify strategies at the systems level, municipal level, agency level and personal level for ending domestic violence and promoting healthy relationships. The plan will be presented to the MAG Regional Council by the fourth quarter. Web-Based Resource Development: assist with the following projectsVirtual Youth Network Establish a virtual regional youth network on the MAG Web site. This network will include information about all municipal youth councils in the region as well as nonprofit and faith-based organizations who serve youth. The impact of the network will be better coordination of activities, more accurate identification of gaps and duplication of efforts, and improved utilization of existing resources. The MAG Human Services Coordinating Committee will approve the network content in the first quarter and oversee updates to the site throughout the year. At least 75 percent of respondents in an online survey will indicate the network effectively provides coordination and a catalyst to communication and action. Human Services Information Station Develop a Human Services Information Station on the MAG Web site. This will include a community calendar as well as updated information about trainings, events and resources to assist those in need, with a focus on assisting those in or facing foreclosure. Unduplicated visits to the Web site will increase by 50 percent from the first quarter to the fourth. The impact will be greater utilization and coordination of services as a result of centralized access to information as measured by an online survey. Annual Homeless Street Count Facilitate a county-wide homeless street count in the third quarter. Analyze information gathered from the homeless street count and compare to previous years to determine the needs and patterns of homeless individuals and families in the region. Effectiveness and coordination of the homeless street count will improve by 25 percent according to feedback received through homeless street count debriefing meetings. Coordinate with the Arizona Department of Economic Security and the Arizona Department of Education to release results showing a comprehensive number of people who are homeless in the region. Annual Appreciation Luncheon for Homeless Service Providers Facilitate the Annual Appreciation Luncheon in the third quarter. One hundred and fifty people will attend. Of this number, at least 80 percent will indicate the event has increased their motivation to end homelessness and has supported the collaborations they have with other people striving for the same goal as reported in evaluations of the event. Domestic Violence Policy: assist with the following projectsYouth Empowerment Project Expansion Expand the Youth Empowerment Project and WebofFriends.org to include resources and assessments for teens who abuse or may be at-risk for abusive behavior. Assess adult batterer intervention programs for relevance to abusive teens and incorporate appropriate elements to the project and Web site. The impact will be that teens will have effective prevention and intervention tools to assist abusers, as well as victims, of teen dating violence. These updates will be presented to the MAG Regional Domestic Violence Council for approval by the fourth quarter. Teen Dating Violence Tool Kits Develop and distribute tool kits containing teen dating violence curriculum and collateral material for teens, practitioners serving youth and faith based organizations. The tool kit contents will be presented to and approved in the third quarter. The impact of the toolkits will be teens and adults working with teens will be better prepared to end teen dating violence through the utilization of tested successful strategies. Summer SemesterHomeless Planning: assist with the following projectsProvider Trainings Facilitate training every other month with an emphasis on cross-training between homeless and domestic violence shelter and service providers. An average of 25 people will attend each training and at least 75 percent will indicate information received at the training will result in improved service delivery as measured in an evaluation administered at each session. Heat Relief Network Work with stakeholders through a summer heat relief planning group to create and distribute summer heat relief maps showing water hydration locations and refuge locations available to homeless individuals in the region. Maps will be distributed to homeless individuals throughout the county beginning in June and will be listed on the MAG Web site and on the Community Information and Referral Web site. Successful coordination will be increased by 25 percent from the previous year as indicated through surveys distributed to stakeholders and homeless individuals utilizing the hydration and refuge locations.
